Cooking for Swallowing Difficulties: Demonstrations

How to cook for someone with swallowing problems is a frequently encountered issue amongst those caring for people with Bulbar onset MND or advanced MND.  These sessions are relaxed, involve your participation and havea sense of fun.  For example, one of the most favourable comment from a recent session was, "And the best thing about it is that it sticks to my spoon!"

No-one gets it right, first time, in terms of the degree of "thickness" of a pureed meal for the person who needs such a meal.  You need to experiment to find the correct thickness for the person, whose requirements might change with time.

Not a "This is the only way to do it," session, more an exchange of ideas and recipes that will help you think about how to adapt your normal meals for someone with swallowing problems.

Our next "Cooking for Swallowing Problems" demonstration will be held at our Glasgow Patient and Carer Centre, Unit 7, 74/76 Firhill Road, Glasgow on Thursday April 29th at 2pm.  To book a place give Bob a call on 0141 945 1077.  It is hoped to hold these every 3 months if there is sufficient interest.  The January and July sessions will be in the evening, October and April sessions in the afternoons.  If you can't get to Glasgow let us know and we will try to organise something closer to you and advertise it on here.

Anyone interested in this topic should also have a look at our "Dysphagia" section under the "Top Tips" pages of this website, where you will find a number of links to recipes and ideas to help you prepare food for someone with swallowing difficulties.
