Lang Break Caravan

Lang Break CaravanMND Scotland was delighted to accept the keys to the Lang Break Caravan at Craigtoun Meadows Holiday Park near St Andrews in 2004. It was the brainchild of Stephen Lang, whose wish it was to provide a haven away from every day routine for those who have a connection with MND.  Stephen was diagnosed with MND when he was 36 years old.  He and his wife had three young children and found it increasingly difficult to holiday as a family.

Stephen and Denise, along with family and friends, raised in excess of £35,000 to purchase a specialised and fully equipped static caravan.  From March to October 2007, fifty people used the caravan.  Although it is fully adapted to meet the needs of those with disabilities, it is available to anyone who wishes to take a break in the most picturesque areas of Scotland.

Specially Equipped for People with Limited Movement

In the caravan, special emphasis has been placed on providing ease and safety of access, including wider exterior doors and exterior lights to illuminate the approach. The inside of the caravan has been designed for easy maneuverability with wide sliding doors giving access to each room. Carpets throughout the caravan are an attractive and durable loop-pile type particularly suited to wheelchair traffic, and the electric switches, sockets and appliance controls are placed at heights appropriate for wheelchair users.

The lounge area has comfortable seating which doubles as a bed. The table can be moved if required.  The large double bedroom has twin beds, two good sized wardrobes and plenty of storage space. The second bedroom is smaller with twin beds and storage cupboards.  The fitted kitchen includes lower level work surfaces and a recess beneath the sink unit for ease of accessibility. Quarter turn lever taps are fitted in the kitchen and shower room for ease of operation.

The extra large shower base is recessed into the floor to provide level access and a folding shower seat and toilet rail are fitted in addition to the essential fixed support and grab rails.
