Regional Study Days

22nd March 2010, MND and Dementia, The Teacher Building, St Enoch Square, Glasgow.  Cost per delegate £50 including lunch and morning and afternoon tea/coffee.

Recent research has shown that between 5 and 15% of people diagnised with frontal-temporal lobe degeneration (sometimes referred to as FTD or FTLD) will  also go on to develop motor neurone disease.  Many of those with dementia are already in some kind of residential care and the development of the additional symptoms are not always recognised as a separate condition which can lead to the need for the same interventions as are required in MND.

Other research has shown that up to 50% of people with MND can suffer from cognitive changes, often so subtle they are only detectable by specific psychological testing.  A significant group of about 15% of those with MND will also go on to develop FTLD and an associated dementia.

This Advanced Study Day aims to explore the types of cognitive change that commonly occur when both MND and Dementia are present, the implications the resultant loss of capacity has in legal terms, the implications and impact on family and carers and the management techniques and support mechanisms that can be employed.
