Many people with MND find treatment with complementary therapies helpful. Complementary therapies will complement existing medical care and should not be seen as a replacement to current prescribed medication. The treatments on offer won’t cure you of any medical condition, however they may assist with stress management, pain relief, muscle cramps or relaxation.

Complementary therapy treatments at home

MND Scotland have recently introduced a service providing complementary therapy sessions to either people with MND or their carers within their own homes. The treatments consist of up to 10 sessions either on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis and are provided by qualified volunteer therapists.

At present this service is available within the Central Belt area of Scotland, Ayrshire and parts of Aberdeenshire, the Borders and Edinburgh. We are now looking to expand the service in Tayside, Fife and the Highlands and are currently seeking therapists for these areas. The programme will be rolled out gradually to other areas of the country within the next couple of years depending upon demand and the ability to recruit therapists.

The treatments consist of either Aromatherapy, Therapeutic Massage, Indian Head Massage, Reiki or Reflexology depending upon the qualifications of the therapist and the suitability of a treatment for a specific client.

If you would like further information about the treatments on offer or would like to be considered for complementary therapy, please contact Dawn Hamilton on 0141 945 1077 or email dawn [dot] hamilton [at] mndscotland [dot] org [dot] uk
