Fun Run 2010

On Sunday May 16th , 631 gathered in Strathclyde Park to take part in our Annual Fun Run. This is our biggest event of the year and we're hoping that by the time all the sponsorship money is counted, we will have at least equalled last year's record amount raised of £60,000. Thanks to everyone who ran, walked or was wheeled round the loch

This year Eden Springs generously gave us 650 bottles of water to keep all the participants refreshed, and so we are shamelessly plugging their product as we think they may be kind enough to make a further donation(http://www.edensprings.co.uk/free-bottled-water,uk,5,4.html) and yes, that is Scottish rugby legend Scott Hastings..........

Eden Springs, the UK’s leading supplier of water coolers, said "we are delighted to be supporting MND Scotland with a donation of water bottles to keep fundraisers hydrated in the Strathclyde Park Fun Run event! MND Scotland is a fantastic charity helping and supporting both people with motor neurone disease and their families, and we hope our donation will go some way to helping the wonderful people taking part raise money for this hugely worthwhile cause.”

We are of course really grateful to all the companies and individuals who kindly donate items for use, so thanks also go out to Tunnock’s, ASDA @ Linwood, Greggs, AMP3, and Bishopton Scouts who generously donated quite a few tombola prizes.

Last but not least, a huge thank you to all the volunteers & staff who turned up to run the refreshments tent, the tombola & the raffle & the door game,  staff the marshall stations, give massages, staff the water station…....the event works so well because you help us!

Firewalk

The Firewalk at Falkirk Stadium on March 12th was a tremendous success, with 59 fundraisers bravely walking over the hot coals. No burns or blisters were reported!

The event was so good that we'll be doing it again next year, so please contact the Fundraising Department if you want to take part in this amazing experience.

31st May 2009 - Edinburgh Marathon

MND Scotland’s relay teams and individual runners conquered the gruelling 26.2 mile Edinburgh Marathon course as temperatures soared to 22C in the middle of the day.

However, flagging runners were buoyed by roaring spectators, who gathered in their thousands to cheer them over the finish line at Musselburgh Race Course, and our hospitality tent situated at the finish area provided refreshments and much needed massage!

Well done and thanks to Carly McGhee for organising the relay teams, and to our individual runners Richard Bright, Paul Dwyer, Robert Chalmers, Graeme McDonald, and Fraser Thom.

19th May 2009 - Coast to Coast Cycle

A group of 24 cyclists from BP Aberdeen will cycle across Scotland from 29th - 31st May 2009. Riders start on the West Coast at Skye Bridge and finish north of Aberdeen at Newburgh. It’s a tough ride with some challenging hill climbs and a total distance of 230miles comprising 75 to 85 miles per day. Most of the riders have not ridden distances close to these, never mind over the 3 days!

Ian Bowen, who worked for BP as a Drilling and Petroleum Engineer for 28 years, was diagnosed with MND 2 years ago. Ian worked until January 2009 when he was no longer able to continue - he now relies on a wheelchair for mobility. In the film below Ian describes the reasons to support MND Scotland, highlighting how it provides valuable support services for MND sufferers and their families.

The great news is BP's Matched Effort programme will double whatever they raise!!! You can follow the progress of their sponsorship at www.justgiving.com/teambp_c2c_mn

26th April 2009 - London Marathon

Jenny Leitch

On 26th April 2009 Jenny Leitch became our first ever “official” London Marathon runner, taking our guaranteed Silver Bond place. Her training paid off - living in Switzerland meant she regularly did training runs through snow and ice - and she completed her first ever marathon in a fantastic time of 3 hours 56 minutes and 49 seconds. She has also managed to raise in excess of £10,000 by taking part!

Also running for MND Scotland, having secured places in the public ballot, were Graham Hogg (3 hours 50 minutes), Graeme Reid (4 hours 39 minutes), Karen Fuller (5 hours 3 minutes), and Richard Campbell (4 hours 4 minutes).
The weather wasn't ideal for our runners, with temperatures rising throughout the day. Graeme said "It was a tremendous day and the atmosphere and crowds were fantastic, I really enjoyed it although it didn't feel like it at the end!"

Well done to all our runners!!Karen Fuller

On Saturday 7 March 104 “geniuses” from the wee village of Dollar swapped their regular pint in the Kings Seat for a quiz night in the Dollar Community Centre.Quiz Masters Fergie McGregor and John Peden

Fergie McGregor and John Peden - our quiz masters (pictured) did a wonderful job of testing the minds of Dollar’s most knowledgeable residents. Organised by Easton Boyd and Ian White from the Dollar Community Council, the event raised £680 for MND Scotland.

The village has reacted extremely positively to supporting MND Scotland and various fundraising events are planned – sponsored walks and parachute jumps included!! Five former pupils from Dollar Academy are also taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon on May 31st along with some oher Dollar residents – running in relay teams to raise more money for MND Scotland. 23rd March 2009 - Scottish Team Prepares for Bicycle Race of a Lifetime – Across the USA

In June 2009, a Scottish based team of six amateur cyclists will embark on an extraordinary journey that will test the utmost limits of their physical endurance, mental resilience and commitment to a cause. MND Scotland is delighted to have been chosen as one of the charities to benefit from their participation in the event.

As competitors in the 2009 Race Across America (RAAM), The Caledonian Chain Gang team of Andrew Bright, Charles Richardson, Dave Forrester, Peter Loft, Phil Hedley and Simon Taylor will get on a bicycle and pedal in relay format across the breadth of the American continent, 3,000 miles from Pacific to Atlantic, stopping to change riders only when necessary.

Commenting on his participation in the event, Simon Taylor said, “The race seemed like a good idea and I didn't think anyone else would be up for it - a bit of machismo bluff that backfired! However, I’ve always fancied a road trip across the USA and this is a fantastic opportunity to raise some cash for some good causes.” The Caledonian Chain Gang team has received some financial support from Chep and Intelitap but will be funding the majority of the trip themselves whilst raising money for their chosen charities, Cancer Research UK, Help for Heroes, MND Scotland, Alstrom Syndrome UK Support Group and Lothian Autistic Society.

After a recent training trip to Manchester Velodrome where the team were lucky enough to enjoy some track practice and discussions with the GB Cycling team, Performance Director, Dave Brailsford said, “ It’s great to see these guys take on such an exciting adventure - this race will be a real test not just of their cycling ability but also of their mental strength and teamwork. We wish them all the best and hope that they achieve everything they have set out to do.”
