Meet Our Volunteers

Slavica Zelenovic, HQ volunteer

Slavica Zelenovic

Slavica is one of our longer serving volunteers, working at a variety of financial and administrative tasks at head office.  Slavica has been with MND Scotland for over 3 years and originally hailed from what is now known as Bosnia, formerly part of Yugoslavia.

Slavica left her friends and family behind during the Yugoslav civil war to find medical support for one of her children and has stayed in Scotland ever since.  She now lives in Glasgow with her son and daughter.

In her younger years Slavica was a member of Yugoslavia's national basketball team and received a Europa Cup medal in 1976 due to her participation in the team's international achievements.  When she emigrated to Scotland she was still an active player, playing in the National League and had won player of the year award during the 1999 – 2000 season.  Slavica briefly turned her hand to coaching basketball and undertook a level 1 basic coaching award to teach children.  Unfortunately due to ill health she isn’t able now to participate in or coach the sport she enjoys.

Prior to coming to Scotland Slavica worked as a PA for a major Yugoslavian sporting organisation; She dealt directly with the directors of national and international organisations and handled requests from individual sports clubs.   In Scotland Slavica wanted to improve her chances of finding a job, so she attended an ESF project to learn to speak and write better English.  Subsequently Slavica joined the Glasgow North project which assists people with health problems get back into work.  Her daughter suggested that volunteering would help her gain the experience and the language skills necessary to get a job and through Glasgow North she was matched up with MND Scotland.

Slavica volunteers a few hours a week with MND Scotland and she says that she likes helping people and that the staff are supportive of her.  The tasks she undertakes ranges from counting the can collections, filing and inputting details into the database.  Although her health issues are such that she is unable to work full time she has found that her volunteering opportunity gets her out of the house, enables her to meet new people and improve her English.

All of the staff and management of MND Scotland are proud to have Slavica as part of our team and we hope that she will continue to volunteer to work for the charity in future years.
